Noida Tragedy: Youth Dies After Falling Into Open Drain Amid Waterlogging, Electrocution Claims Trigger Blame Game
A young man, Aryan, died after falling into an open drain in Noida's Sector 57 while walking through a waterlogged road during heavy rainfall. Conflicting claims over electrocution have sparked a blame game between the Noida Authority and the electricity department, while the incident has triggered widespread public outrage over civic negligence and unsafe infrastructure.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when Aryan was walking through a waterlogged road following heavy rainfall. Video footage of the incident shows him wading through the flooded stretch before walking along the edge of the road. His foot suddenly slipped, and he fell into an open drain approximately three feet deep.
According to initial findings, one of the slabs covering the drain was allegedly unstable, causing Aryan to lose his footing and fall into the drain. People present at the scene pulled him out after considerable effort and immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to save his life.
Aryan was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The video also shows another person rushing to assist Aryan before suddenly stepping back, apparently after experiencing an electric shock. However, it remains unclear whether Aryan died due to electrocution.
Aryan's family has accused the Noida Authority of negligence, alleging that the drain was left open without adequate protection. Local residents have also expressed concern over the widespread presence of uncovered drains across the city, describing them as a serious public safety hazard.
The incident has triggered widespread panic and public anger in the area, while a blame game has emerged between the Noida Authority and the electricity department.
Officials of the Noida Authority have claimed that electric current spread into the accumulated water from a pole located next to the drain and that Aryan collapsed after coming into contact with it. The electricity department, however, has categorically denied that electrocution was involved, maintaining that the incident was solely the result of waterlogging and negligence related to the open drain.
The tragedy has intensified concerns over urban infrastructure, monsoon preparedness, and public safety, as questions continue to be raised over the circumstances surrounding Aryan's death and the accountability of the authorities responsible for maintaining civic infrastructure.
